Katie Shanahan

Director of Development

Katie Shanahan serves as the Director of Development for the Allo Hope Foundation. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Nursing at Northeastern University and has worked as a Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in a large pediatric hospital in Boston, Massachusetts for the past ten years specializing in Transplant and Research. Katie has experience in high quality, compassionate patient care, protocol development, and quality improvement. Her extensive knowledge of the healthcare system and patient centered outcomes paired with her personal experience with allommunization and HDFN lends itself to her skills in patient advocacy, awareness, and donor engagement.

As an alloimmunized mother herself, Katie came into the Foundation expressly to help change the experiences and outcomes of the families who come after her. Her first pregnancy in 2021 was complicated by Anti-D antibodies and her son required intrauterine transfusions, NICU time, post birth transfusions and erythropoietin. Ultimately, her experience fostered a fierce drive to give back to the alloimmunized community and a deep passion for patient advocacy, healthcare inequality and maternal mental health. She now manages the Foundations individual and corporate fundraising efforts, community partnerships and sponsorships, and donor outreach and engagement.

Anti-D Antibodies

Katie learned about her anti-D antibodies after donating blood. Her first pregnancy was complicated by a subchorionic hemorrhage and her anti-D titers reached critical at 16 weeks. Her baby, Liam, required 4 intrauterine blood transfusions the first of which was performed at 25 weeks. Liam was born in October of 2021 and required NICU time, 4 post birth transfusions, and erythropoietin. He is now a happy, healthy and thriving toddler. Katie utilized the Allo Hope Foundation throughout her pregnancy and after Liam was born for education, support and help advocating for her family. In gratitude, she hopes to give back to other alloimmunized mothers. Katie, her husband Alec, Liam and their cat Lily, live together north of Boston, Massachusetts. She received her undergraduate and graduate Nursing degrees at Northeastern University and now works as a Nurse Practitioner with the Research team at Boston Children’s Hospital. When she is not working or spending time with her family she enjoys traveling, hiking, and running.
