Chianne Shepherd
Chianne became alloimmunized during the birth of her first daughter, though her anti-E was initially dismissed as insignificant. It wasn’t until her second pregnancy that she learned the true risks after being referred to maternal-fetal medicine. Due to gaps in provider awareness, her pregnancy was largely unmonitored, and she was repeatedly reassured that her antibodies would not cause severe disease. Late in pregnancy, she developed an additional antibody (anti-c), and despite what her providers told her, her daughter was born affected by HDFN. Even though there were clear symptoms, her newborn’s care was impacted by a lack of provider familiarity with HDFN, resulting in delayed recognition and treatment even after hospital admission. Thankfully, her daughter overcame HDFN. The experience reshaped Chianne’s understanding of the condition and the importance of informed, proactive care.
Between her second and third pregnancies, Chianne found The Allo Hope Foundation, which transformed her understanding of alloimmunization and empowered her to advocate for her own care. Determined to have a different outcome, Chianne approached her third pregnancy with a carefully selected care team experienced in alloimmunization. With proper monitoring and adherence to best practices, her third daughter also was affected by HDFN but was able to overcome it without intervention.
As a certified holistic fertility specialist and “crunchy” mama, Chianne is passionate about supporting women through informed, individualized care and believes that even with alloimmunization, it is possible to have a pregnancy and birth experience aligned with personal values. She is committed to improving awareness, provider education, and outcomes for families affected by HDFN.
